William Dean Lee explains the capabilities of the Sector North Carolina command center to Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo and U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre following a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Department of Homeland Security interagency operations center opening May 31, 2011. The new operations center, which is adjacent to the Sector command center, will allow watchstanders from the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to share information and to coordinate more directly on port security and environmental response activities. The Interagency Operations Centers (IOC) project is a major acquisition that will provide a framework and tools for improved effectiveness and efficiency of interagency operations in the ports. The U.S. Coast Guard Acquisition Directorate is delivering technology demonstrations of its WatchKeeper software at 17 ports across the U.S. by 2012. WatchKeeper is expected to be deployed at a total of 35 Coast Guard sector locations by 2014.
