TRICARE: Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) required under the Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act requires, amongst other things, all Americans have Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) for health care by 1 January, 2014, or suffer a financial penalty. TRICARE health Insurance meets the MEC definition. Visit the Frequently Asked Questions section of www.tricare.mil to view detailed information. Additional information on the Affordable Care Act and TRICARE, including downloadable resources, can be found at www.tricare.mil/aca.

For those members who are already enrolled in a TRICARE health plan, in compliance with the Affordable Care Act, the IRS will be informed of all beneficiaries who have MEC coverage based on the information listed in DEERS. It is important social security numbers (SSNs) for all family members and enrollees are accurate in DEERS. Therefore, all TRICARE subscribing sponsors are encouraged to ensure DEERS is up to date to include all eligible dependent's and beneficiary's SSNs. This can be done by contacting your DEERS/RAPIDS representative at your SPO or contacting the Defense Manpower Data Center Support Office (DSO) at 1-800-538-9552.
