The Vigilant and her sister-cutter Reliance were built by the Fardy Brothers of Baltimore at a cost of $29,000 each. They were the last cutters built that were powered only by sail. The Vigilant was accepted on 3 June 1867 as was ordered to Boston. She served there until being ordered to Portland, Maine in 1870. There is no further record of her actions or her ultimate disposition.
