USCGC STATEN ISLAND is the forty fifth “Island Class”
cutter to join the fleet, and is named after Staten Island, NY. Although built primarily as a Law Enforcement Platform,
Staten Island, like any Coast Guard unit, is considered a multi-mission resource. From Search and Rescue, to National Defense,
to Marine Environmental Protection, Staten Island and her crew are ready to respond. Bollinger Machine Shop and
Shipyard in Lockport, LA, built the 110’ cutter. It is equipped with state of the art machinery and electronics.
The cutter’s design is based on the internationally known Vosper Thorneycroft Patrol Boats of Great Britain.
Her twin V-16 Caterpillar diesel engines move the ship at speeds in excess of 26 knots. Designed as a high-speed
heavy-weather craft, Staten Island also employs active fin roll stabilizers to minimize ship motion and crew fatigue.
By combining tradition with the latest in modern technology, Staten Island proudly accepts the challenges facing today’s
Coast Guard.
