Local School Information
For members who reside in Coast Guard Housing aboard Fort Wadsworth (Staten Island, NY), the Coast Guard and NYC Department of Education (DOE) have maintained a relationship with the PS 53 Elementary School and IS 24 Middle School that allows the children who reside on-base to attend these public schools. Our relationship with these schools dates back to when the Coast Guard first moved to Staten Island from Governor's Island. Both are highly rated schools and are relationships that greatly benefit our Coast Guard families.
High school students have multiple options available to them. The local high school is Curtis High School, but NYC also has a Choice Enrollment program which allows students to attend other schools. For anyone transferring to Sector New York with high school age dependents, we highly recommend you review the High School Information page for additional details and obstacles regarding high school student enrollment. Also call CWO Don McQueen at (718) 354-4022 with any questions you may have about the process.
For families considering Home Schooling, please visit the NYC Department of Education Home Schooling Page.
The Spouse's Club highly suggests that you register with Notify NYC in order to receive emergency communications for the city including school closings.
