Images scanned from ship's archives of the PENOBSCOT BAY Commissioning Ceremony on January 4, 1985. The temperature at New York's LaGuardia Airport did not rise above 33°F on the day of the ceremony; members of the official party wore standard-issue trenchcoats and black leather gloves to cut the chill of the midwinter cold.
